How we research and rank
We judge every product on how it is documented to behave on textured resin and plastic rather than on a swatch card, working from manufacturer specifications, published range comparisons, and the reports of painters who have worked through a full range.
Who writes these picks
BrushBench is written and maintained by its editorial team. We publish under the BrushBench name rather than a personal byline, because our rankings come from documented research rather than one person's hands-on experience. Where a specification, measurement, or figure appears in a guide, it comes from the manufacturer or a cited source, not from our own bench.
What we score on
Every pick is judged on the same criteria. We weight them by what actually matters for the way you will use the gear, then write up the tradeoffs honestly.
Paint performance
Coverage, flow, reactivation in a wet palette, and documented compatibility with common varnishes and contrast mediums, drawn from maker specifications and painter reports.
Brush quality and retention
Reported point retention past twenty-plus sessions, belly fullness for ink loading, and the snap-back difference between synthetic and sable, taken from maker specifications and long-term owner reports.
Airbrush fit and finish
Published needle and nozzle sizing against the 0.2 to 0.3mm range that detail work needs, rated compressor noise and psi stability, and how easily owners report cleaning the unit with standard airbrush cleaner.
Value for the range
Price per ml or per reported brush lifespan rather than sticker price, because a cheap brush that lasts two sessions costs more than one that lasts twenty.
Beginner accessibility
Whether the product comes with enough instruction or ecosystem support for a first-time painter to succeed on day one.
How our picks work
Each category roundup is ranked by our editorial score. The highest-scored option carries the Top Pick badge. Separately, the option that delivers the most for the money carries the Best Value badge. They are often different products on purpose: the best-scored is not always the smartest buy for most people, and we tell you which is which.
What we never do
- We take no payment, free product, or sponsorship in exchange for coverage or a ranking. There are no paid placements.
- We do not claim to have tested a product we have not tested, and we do not publish reviews under the name of a person who does not exist.
- We say what is wrong with a product, not just what is right. Every pick lists real tradeoffs.
- We match recommendations to your situation (fitment, skill level, budget, and use case) instead of pushing one product on everyone.
- Prices and specifications change. Always confirm the current price and fitment on the retailer's page before buying.
How we make money
BrushBench is funded by affiliate commissions. When you buy through a link on our site, the retailer may pay us a small commission at no additional cost to you. That funding never influences our scores or our picks. Full details are on our affiliate disclosure.
